How to review and interpret the print-only fidelity to the digital lessons via the
Unplugged? section
Lessons are designed to use networked resources, and to orchestrate interactions
between Student and Teacher computers and tablets. But, there are times when the
network is simply not available.
For these "unplugged" episodes, the Teacher Lesson Briefs always include an
Unplugged? section to provide guidance on how to proceed with the lesson despite
loss of network connectivity.
The supplemental materials available for use in Unplugged? sessions can typically be
found in the View Lesson Brief Prep and Materials Information section of the Lesson
Brief. In some cases, materials may be downloadable directly from the Unplugged? section.
Rating Print-Only Fidelity to the Digital Lessons:
For each lesson, the Unplugged? section rates the accuracy and exactness, or
fidelity, of the print-only version as either High, Medium, or Low.
- High — Lessons labeled High can be replicated fairly easily on paper.
The unplugged status is not likely to cause a significant interruption in
the lesson experience.
- Medium — Lessons labeled Medium contain certain elements that are not
easily replicated on paper; for example, an activity may center around an
audio recording or visual image that cannot be reproduced on paper, or the
orchestration of the lesson may be significantly different in digital and
paper versions. Continue to use the tools provided in your digital lesson
(projections, teacher guides) with students if possible.
- Low — Lessons are labeled Low when the lesson experience relies
heavily on students having access to the digital lesson, and the effort to
reproduce the lesson on paper in an unplugged environment would jeopardize
the teaching and learning experiences. Low lessons often include apps or
embedded features — pulling in writing from previous writing prompts,
working with previously annotated text, or manipulating digital images —
that are central to completing the intended work of the lesson.
