Microsoft Internet Explorer Troubleshooting Page

This is the Troubleshooting Page for MSIE versions of the FIT applet demo.  Below is a list of common problems along with their possible causes and solutions.

Most Common Problems

Possible Causes/Solutions

The applet starts to load but freezes before the Logon Screen appears.  No error messages are displayed, but there is an empty gray rectangle where the applet is supposed to appear.

You are probably missing a file called EXTRAC32.EXE.

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.x should place a file called EXTRAC32.EXE in your Windows directory as part of its installation procedure. However, in some cases it fails to do so.

Click here to download EXTRAC32.ZIP.  Then, unzip it and copy EXTRAC32.EXE to your C:\Windows directory (or Win95 or WinNT, as your system requires).  Click here if you need to download the shareware WinZip utility from Nico Mak Computing, Inc.

The Logon Screen asks for a User Name and Trading Password, but you haven’t been provided with either.

You don’t need a User Name or Trading Password to continue with the demo. Simply press the SignOn button.

As of this date, the Logon Screen is not fully deployed.  These fields are for display only.  Other security measures are in place earlier in the demo process.  If you’ve gotten this far, you’re authorized to view the demo.

The applet loads and appears to run, but the Price Display Windows display zeros instead of prices.

You are probably not fully registered with the FIT Development Team to view the demo.

One of the security features built into the FIT Service is the requirement that your IP address be placed on a list of authorized users.  Computers not so identified on this list will not be able to see prices.

Contact a FIT Development Team Representative to gain access to the demo.

Other Issues

Currently, only Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and its updates are supported for demo purposes.  Version 3.02 is preferred.  Click here to download a zipped version of  MSIE 3.02 for Win95/NT (msie302.zip) from our Development Site Server.  This file is approximately 10.5 mb in size.

Click here if you need to download the shareware WinZip utility from Nico Mak Computing, Inc.

IE 3.0 must have Security Safety Level set to medium (recommended) or low.  Click here to see screen clips of proper Security Safety Level settings.

Your computer must be running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.

In your computer’s Network Settings / DNS Configuration, Domain should be set to “qs1.dowjones.net” and DNS Server Search Order should be “159.220.18.130”.  Click here to see screen clips showing proper DNS settings.

Your computer video must be set to display properly.  Screen size should be at least 800 x 600 pixels, and 1024 x 768 is preferred.  Color depth should be at High Color (aka 16-bit or 65K) mode or better.  256 simultaneous colors are not enough.   Click here for help in adjusting  your video settings.

Your computer should have the Arial font installed.  This is a standard part of Windows 95/NT installation, but check this if font alignment looks awkward.

MSIE Troubleshooting Steps

If you are still having trouble, here are the troubleshooting steps that the FIT Development Team Representative will lead you through:

Check that EXTRAC32.EXE is present in the Windows directory.

Check that the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 is properly installed.  Version 3.02 is preferred.  Version 4 is not supported at this time but will be in future releases.

Check connectivity, via ping and tracert commands from the MS-DOS prompt:

Ping to djfix2 should come back with a response other than timeout.

Ping to fits1 should come back with a response other than timeout.

Tracert to djfix2 should come back with no more than four (4) hops.

Check that computer’s IP address is in the FIT Development  host table.

Start IE 3.0 and check that Security Safety Level is set to medium (recommended) or low.

Attempt to connect to the demo site.  Wait for 1-2 minutes for the .cab file to download and install.  If it takes longer than this, there is some problem with your system configuration.  After the .cab is downloaded and installed, the applet should start within 5-20 seconds.   You should have to wait no more than 30 seconds after the signon screen.

If there are still problems, troubleshoot the network/connection to port 1570 on djfix2.

Please contact your FIT Development Team representative if you have any difficulties at all with connecting to the demo.
